Red, Gold and Green…

Golden hour is a wonderful time of day full of gooey oranges and yellows. It is a coveted time for photos as the light is nice and warm and diffuses evenly across the sky so is traditionally more flattering in images. It takes place the hour (more or less) before sunrise and sunset every day.

Sunrise / Sunset times will shift depending on the time of year. In the summer, the morning golden hour will occur much earlier than in the winter. Conversely, summer’s evening golden hour happens much later.

But I have young children so this doesn’t work for me…

It’s OK! If you have “little one’s” evening may not be the best time of day for you. You can rest assured that I also do lots of shoots outside of Golden Hour for this exact reason. Early Morning sessions (around 8.30/9 am) work well as long as we have areas of shade. Little kids can be more cooperative at the beginning of the day so we can take advantage of that window of opportunity with fresh faces and upbeat moods! You know your family best so choose a time that works for you. Alternatively, look at having a shoot in the Autumn / Winter when the golden hour times are earlier. I am on hand to advise you every step of the way.

What to think about when booking a shoot

When booking a session, talk to me about the best time of day for your kids and what type of images you would like. Think about your kid’s daily routine and schedule. Consider nap times, meals, energy levels and overall mood depending on the time of day. Of course, I want good light but more importantly, I want your family to enjoy the experience and feel comfortable.
